Il n'est pas toujours simple de former les adjectifs et les noms pour les nationalités en anglais. On utilise the + un adjectif de nationalité se terminant par -ese ou -ish avec un verbe au pluriel, pour faire référence à toutes les personnes de cette nationalité (voir les deux dernières phrases ci-dessous). L'adjectif de nationalité réfère souvent à la langue parlée dans le pays aussi, mais pas toujours.
Exemples
- Pays: I live in Japan.
- Adjectif: He likes Japanese food.
- Origines: She is a Japanese person. = She is from Japan. = She is Japanese.
- Langue: She speaks Japanese.
- Décrire un groupe: Spaniards often drink wine. = Spanish people often drink wine.
- Décrire un groupe: The Chinese enjoy fireworks. = Chinese people enjoy fireworks.
Dans certains cas, une nationalité peut avoir des connotations négatives pour des raisons historiques ou politiques. Dans ce cas, beaucoup de locuteurs natifs ne l'utiliseront pas, et a la place ils feront une construction du type adjectif + people ou people from + le nom du pays. C'est le cas pour les noms suivis d'une étoile ci-dessous. Des constructions alternatives, plus neutres, sont données entre parenthèses.
